For those new to the term “Scentwork” is an activity where dogs use their sense of smell to find specific odours, Kong, Clove, Gun Oil and Truffle Oil. It’s a rewarding, stimulating, and enjoyable activity that builds trust and relationships with your best friend. Both

What To Bring To your Scent Work

Dog’s Favourite High Value Treats – Bring a few different kinds in a sealable
“Tupperware-type” container marked with the dog’s name. Please avoid kibble, or crumbly
or crunchy cookie-type treats. Small pieces of cooked hot dog quarters, steak bits, cheese
cubes or string cheese coins are good choices.
Treat Pouch and Clicker– For dog treat, magnetic so treats don’t fall out and ac Clicker for
positive reinforcement. No plastic bags, please.

Bed or Crate – Located in your car for the dog to rest when not working
Fresh Drinking Water & Bowl – Nosework is thirsty business & a dog can’t scent properly
if his mucous membranes are dry. Water for you, too, if it’s a hot day.
Poop Bags – For clean-up
Collar & Lead– No slip or pinch collars, as well as an 8-10’ lead/line. Both will be used ONLY
for Scentwork and your dog needs a full unrestrained range of movement.
Selecting a Harness for Scent Work
One of the most frequently asked questions in our scent work classes is what
type of harness teams should use.
The ideal harness for scent work includes the following features:

  • Does not restrict freedom of movement

  • Has a D-ring so the line can be attached behind the withers (shoulder)

  • Is easy to put on and take of

  • Biothane (pleather) Leads – These are great! Light-weight, washable, non-tangling,
water-proof (yes, we work in the rain!) Please don’t attach any dangling items (poop
bag holders, etc). 6-8 foot is a good length for exterior searches.
